The New Fashion Initiative regularly invites a leading voice in the sustainable and ethical fashion revolution to answer 17 questions about themselves, both personal and professional. It’s our green and socially conscious spin on Vanity Fair‘s beloved Proust Questionnaire. This month, our interviewee is Patrick Duffy, founder of Global Fashion Exchange (GFX) & Intandem Creatives, which focus on sustainability, design and the production of big ideas.
Patrick powers creative teams in New York, Los Angeles, and London and has produced events, created marketing campaigns and activations for some of the world’s most recognized brands. Patrick’s passion for social impact led to the creation of Global Fashion Exchange in 2013, an international initiative challenging the fashion industry to create a more sustainable world. In addition to his work with GFX, Patrick also manages global partnerships for Common Objective (CO) is an intelligent business network for the fashion industry.
What is your favorite article of clothing?
Hard to say, I don’t really have attachment to clothing. My favorite thing right now is a black T-shirt. It’s slimming in times when I have been comforting myself with lots of treats during COVID!
What is the most wonderful thing about the fashion industry right now?
The excitement for real change.
What do you think is the most shocking thing about fashion today?
That there is still so much B.S. about how terrible some brands are to people and planet. It’s infuriating.
What’s your favorite place you’ve ever traveled to?
My mom’s house – omg, HEAVEN!
What is your favorite indulgence?
What makes you happiest?
When others are empowered and thriving.
What environmental or social problem are we overlooking?
Where do I start? There is a growing movement that I am excited about but the systemic issues with racism and exploitation of people and planet are all linked. The system is set up to benefit a small amount of people, the rest suffer. The environment is the same. We are overlooking the fact that world isn’t working when it’s powered by our consumption driven egos. As big and grand as some of them are, they won’t get us out of the mess we are in.
Are you more introverted or extroverted?
Ummmm…..I believe in balance.
What do you do first in the morning?
What was the happiest moment of this past year?
Coming to see my mom, I missed her very much.
The best professional moment of your life thus far?
I don’t really know how to answer this… I guess I never thought of myself as professional, but being included in the WWD for the Earth Day Edition this year was pretty mind blowing. All my mentors and people I look up to were all right there. I was, and still am very humbled.
What was the last outfit you wore that made you feel amazing?
A cape and high heels.
How do you recharge?
Turning off everything and focusing on health.
What three words describe you best?
Never Stops Dreaming.
What makes you laugh the hardest?
I do love irony!
So so many to choose from – I just love The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.
